What's a Reiki Session Like

This blog offers the reader a quick introduction to what’s a Reiki session like.

But first, make sure you know what is Reiki like and what it’s good for.

The Reiki Experience

Experiences can vary and Reiki practitioners have their own style. Many Reiki practitioners also practice other alternative and complementary healing modalities and integrate what they know in an attempt to provide the best healing experience. So, make sure to do your research on the prospective practitioner.

Initiating the Reiki Session

Starchaser sessions typically begin with the client’s assessment of his/her emotional, mental, and physical status over the last few days. This assessment allows the client to initiate the reflective or mindful process that is critical for self-healing and wellness.

The client then clarifies what s/he would like to achieve during the session. The practitioner can help the client to state those goals as positive intentions or affirmations. This step is important for two reasons. First, because most energy modalities promote self-healing, it’s critical that the client sets his/her own intention for the session. Second, because the healing session will focus on those intentions, it is important that they support positive outcomes. The idea is that the client is focused on what s/he wants to manifest.

The Session

During a Reiki session, the client remains fully clothed and typically lies on a massage table. However, Reiki can be practiced in a chair, while standing, or really anywhere. The table is generally the most comfortable for both the client and practitioner.

The practitioner acts as an open channel and facilitates the flow of life force energy. The key is “facilitate” since the Reiki energy naturally goes where it is needed.

The client and practitioner do not exchange or absorb each other’s energy during the session. In this way, Reiki is completely energetically safe.

Many practitioners work above the client’s body. But, may also lightly touch the surface of the body (a simple laying of the hands). Because Reiki healing is effective without touching, it’s available to those who are sensitive to touch as well.

Reiki treatments are generally subtle or lightly perceived. The client may notice only slight sensations or changes in the body or ambient temperature. Although Reiki is subtle, the actual healing can be profound. The healing process can also unfold over a number of days.

Closing the Session

After the Reiki session is complete, there is usually an assessment of the changes the client can observe and the extent to which the intentions of the session have been achieved.

For intentions focused on the immediate such as greater relaxation, clients often report that their intentions were completely fulfilled. For longer-term intentions such as changing behaviors or improving communication or relationships, clients often note that they feel a greater potential or clarity concerning the issues. Longer-term intentions are not typically achieved in one session.

Continuing the Self-Healing Process

Clients are encouraged to continue the process of reflection after leaving the session and carry it into their everyday lives. It’s the increased awareness that comes from a person’s regular reflection that underlies and orients that person’s choices to live in a way that supports his/her healing and greatest well-being.
