Are You Lazy: That’s a Matter of Opinion

Are You Lazy?

The answer to the question “Are You Lazy? boils down to what’s your perspective. Are Are You Lazy: That a Matter of Opinionyou really being lazy? Maybe doing nothing is exactly what you want or need to do.

I offer here three perspectives or scenarios to clarify what I mean, and help you figure out what’s up with you and your “laziness.”

Maybe You Don’t Want To Do Anything:

Not everyone likes to be busy all the time. You may see nothing wrong with leaving dirty dishes in the sink. Maybe you relish the opportunity to become completely absorbed in a story through binge-watching every episode of a ten-year TV series. You might enjoy being a couch potato, watching your toddler explore with abandonment her toys that are spewed all over the living floor.

While not very typical today, you could be someone who likes a lot space and time just to daydream and watch the clouds go by, especially now that the smog-free skies are absolutely stunning.

Is this you? So, if this is you, relax. You don’t have to listen to what others think being lazy is. They aren’t you. Just be present and cherish the time you have to saturate that long-suppressed desire to do “nothing.”

Maybe You Haven’t Figured Out What You Want to Do:

We all have (or had) extremely busy lives packed with responsibilities and activities. Schedules are a way of life for many. That all came to a screeching halt with Stay-at-Home orders. You probably experienced this too. You might have also had the misfortune of losing your job or being placed on furlough, freeing up a seemingly endless amount of time to fill each day and each week.

It may feel like there’s nothing to do, but there is a lot that you can do. Have you had the thought that maybe all this free time is a great opportunity? Perhaps you could learn a new skill like making designer face masks or fixing some broken home appliances via advice you can find on YouTube. If you’re the active type, you could improve your yoga practice through live streaming or salsa dance with yourself in the mirror. The possibilities are endless. Just use your imagination.

Is this you? So, if this is you, think change. Consider putting that busy history aside, and focus on what you can do. You might discover that it’s what you really have been wanting to do all along.

Maybe Your Body Is Telling You Stop Doing:

We’re all experiencing change: dramatic changes and a whole cluster of simultaneous changes. This is probably happening to you too.

You may find that this makes you hyper-focus on events outside yourself, and ignore what’s going on inside you. This could be zapping your energy and initiative. One reason that you may be automatically shutting down, apathetic and lazy, is your body is trying to tell you to stop doing. It’s asking you to pay attention to what it’s trying to tell you.

So, figure out what your body is trying to tell. How do you feel? What sensations do you pick up? See if you can hear what your inside is trying to say. Literally, ask what it wants to say. Acknowledge what you hear. Just let yourself be with and companion whatever is happening inside. Then, after you’ve truly listened, consider whether you should take an action based on what you learn. Maybe you should just be lazy, rest and regroup.

Is this you? So, if this is you, stop wondering if you’re lazy and take some time to turn inward and listen to your body.

To Summarize….

Now you know what I’m talking about. And, you can probably answer the question: “Am I being lazy?” Knowing why you’ve labeled yourself lazy, and which of the above perspectives applies to you, consider following the suggestions offered above. See if it helps you.

Consider talking with someone about your experience and whether you need some additional assistance.
